Earth Mama Angel Baby Review & Giveaway! CLOSED!

With the news, pressure and eventual admittal that Johnson & Johnson uses toxic ingredients in their baby shampoo, now is a great time to switch to non-toxic, mama-based, childcare products.  One of my absolute favorite organic Mom and Baby companies is Earth Mama Angel Baby.  If you've used their products, you know how amazing they are!  Once a customer, always a customer could easily be Earth Mama Angel Baby's mantra.

If you haven't heard of this wonderful company, which never uses artificial dyes or fragrances and has vowed to keep parabens and SLS away from their products, it's time to learn some more!  Feel free to read more about the safety of their products in their FAQ.

When I had India, I ordered the Postpartum Recovery Essentials Bundle and it changed my little postpartum world!  The Mama Bottom Balm and New Mama Bottom Spray put the hospital's Dermoplast (what most mother's claim as their bottom saver) to absolute shame.  As I was checking out of the hospital, I left the Dermoplast in my hospital room and a nurse came running after me with it telling me how sad I would be if I didn't have the Dermoplast.  I chuckled and explained I had something that was immeasurably better!

Earth Mama Angel Baby's Angel Baby Bottom Balm was listed in my Top 10 favorite baby items for birth to four months as well as four to eight months.

I say all that to explain
that every product I have used from this giving company has been incredible.  And the A Little Something For Baby  I was sent to review is no exception!

Four, carefully packaged, cute little to-go sized bottles of Angel Baby Shampoo & Body Wash, Angel Baby Bottom Balm, Angel Baby Lotion and Angel Baby Oil arrived at my house one afternoon.

It wasn't too much longer and my guinea pig daughter was in the bathtub getting washed with the Angel  Baby Shampoo & Body Wash, a gentle orange and vanilla infused castile soap.  After her bath, I gently massaged her with the Angel Baby Oil.  I never knew how much India would love massage with this virtually scent-free infant massage oil, but it calmed her instantly!  After that I used the Angel Baby Lotion, scented with yummy smelling organic vanilla and organic sweet orange!  Her skin was so soft, she smelled so good and I didn't use ANY products that were harmful for her!

The A Little Something for Baby package would be excellent for traveling, for overnights with grandma, for an easy baby shower gift, for a stocking stuffer, basically, you can't go wrong with this.  Every family with small children could find use for it!

Buy It!
You can buy any Earth Mama Angel Baby products related to Pregnancy, Postpartum care, Breastfeeding, Baby, Family and even Baby Loss on their website.

Win it!
Earth Mama Angel Baby has graciously offered one Uniquely Normal Mom reader a chance to win their very own A Little Something For Baby!  (A $20 value, US and Canadian residents only)

Review & Giveaway: Dot Dot Couture Play Pants CLOSED!

Do your kids constantly wear through the knees of their pants?  Does it drive you crazy like it does me?  It seems like my daughter India has a way of wearing through her pants and making them filthy at the knees as she scuddles around all over the floor.

I recently heard of Play Pants by dot dot Couture and was extremely curious as to how these pants worked and if they worked.  You know those non-skid dots on the bottoms of toddler pajama feet that prevent the feet from skidding and getting worn down?  Genius, right?  They should be termed frustration and owie savers.  Well, the creators of Play Pants, took those little dots and placed them on the knees of pants in cute styles and patterns.

dot dot Couture Play Pants

Yes.  Let me say that again.

Cute patterns and styles on the knees of pants provide slip resistance, keep the dirt away from the actual fabric and keep the knees of pants from being worn down.

It's as amazing as it sounds!

How I wish I would've had these when my daughter was learning to crawl!  It would've kept her from sliding and hurting herself while crawling on our wood and laminate floors.

The crazy thing is, kids still spend a lot of time crawling around on the floor, playing with toys, pretending to be puppies and just exploring, so my daughter, at almost 16 months of age, can still get good use out of these pants.  In fact, dot dot Couture Play Pants not only come in infant sizes, but are also sized up to 6T!

When I first received the Play Pants from dot dot Couture, I was worried that with such wide legs, my daughter may get tripped up in them, but that wasn't the case at all! The wide legs were unbelievably adorable and unique and provided her with ease of movement.

Wide leg of dot dot Couture Play Pants.  By the way, this picture was taken AFTER my daughter played outside while wearing these pants!

Besides being practical, they are cute, and most of all, my daughter can move freely in them.  Here she is in the wide leg design:

Cute and fashionable in dot dot Couture Play Pants

I let her play in them for a day, then I inspected them to make sure they held up.  And they did!

Testing the durability of dot dot Couture Play Pants

I then washed them, and she wore them again!

The bottom line: I'm very impressed not only with the style of the dot dot Couture Play Pants, but also their comfort and how easily my daughter moves around in them!  I wish they had them in my size!

ERGObaby Carrier Review & Giveaway CLOSED

I think I've unlocked one of the greatest secrets to minimal stress parenting with a baby.  Yep, it's true.  This new Mama has a great secret that I'm about to share with you all!

I've previously posted about my most recommended baby items (birth to 4 months and 4 months to 8 months), and those posts have been very popular.  I know when I was a new mom I read reviews and asked other moms what their favorite products were.

I think as moms we are looking for stuff to make our lives normal and natural, all while being convenient and getting the most for our money AND while still taking care of our babies.

In honor of my daughter India's first birthday, I've chosen ONE item that I have deemed as a must-have, and amazingly, this company has offered to do a giveaway!  If you are only going to choose one item from my Top Ten lists, or want to know what the most useful item is with a new baby, this is the item!
My daughter at 6 months, in my favorite baby item: an ERGO baby carrier

Why do I think the ERGO baby carrier is the number one item that every parent should have?
  • Baby can nurse, sleep and take in the world while being close to parents
  • Baby decides who, how and when to interact
  • Mom gets a lot done
  • Instantly calms child
  • Comforting for both parents and child
  • Ergonomically designed to safely carry your child
  • Baby's weight is evenly distributed, no soreness or discomfort!
  • Suitable from birth to toddlerhood
  • One size fits most adults
  • Can be put on without any outside assistance
  • Multiple carry positions: back carry, front carry, hip carry

When India was younger, she loved being nestled close to mein the front carry and took many naps in the ERGO carrier while I was doing dishes, laundry, cooking, and going on walks.  Now, at almost 12 months old, she loves the back carry, in which she can look around and take part in everything, but still be close to me!

Those are just a few of the reasons why I love the ERGO baby carrier and recommend it as the number one baby item for parents!  This is an investment that is highly useful and I consider it not only my number one, must-have baby item, but one of the most useful things in my house!

Buy it!

ERGO has many great designs and colors! Go check them out, you won't be sorry!

GladRags Pantyliner Review & Giveaway CLOSED

The winner is comment #52, Megan!  Congratulations!  I'm sure you will love your GladRags pantyliners!  To all who participated, thank you!

I've mentioned before that we use cloth for pretty much everything.  At home, we very rarely use paper towels, disposable eatery, napkins, disposable diapers, etc.

Also included in that list is cloth menstrual products.

I know, I've lost many of you with that last bit of information.  But please, hear me out - it's not as bad as you think!  I promise!

Disposable products are not only a waste financially (I've said it before, but we spend more money on disposable products than we give to the homeless. Ouch.) and harmful to the environment, but filled with known toxins.

Exposing the most sensitive and vulnerable areas of your body to a wad of dry, bleached, chemical-laden paper isn't my idea of comfort.  Yes, convenient, but at what cost?

Postpartum, I used cloth menstrual pads that I made and they were SO kind and nice to me!  They were absolutely heavenly!  But I could never make a very thin pad, like, pantyliner thin.  It's probably my sewing skills.

When I had the opportunity to try a GladRags pantyliner in adorable prints, I fell in love!  I was worried that it was going to be too thick and bulky because I want something thin for when I workout and wear tons of tight, tight spandex.  As you can tell from this picture with a leftover disposable pad I had around the house, it's not that much different in thickness!

GladRags Pantyliner

I don't know if you're anything like me, but my period normally isn't my favorite time of the month.  I'm bloated, hungry, (maybe) crabby, and I just don't feel too pretty.  But can I get an AMEN for these cute colors??  I think they'd brighten up anyone's day!

Financially, while the initial investment in GladRags products can seem like a big leap, as a full supply is about the cost of two years in disposable products,  it will save you hundreds in the long haul.  GladRags products are designed to last for a minimum of 5 years, and many people report they are still using the same products that  they bought over 15 years ago!

I've convinced you.  I know it.  Except for one small detail.  I know what you're thinking. How do you clean them?!?! I don't want to deal with a mess!

Neither do I.  It's really as simple as putting them in a bucket to soak, then tossing it all straight into the washer.  No touching anything, no scrubbing anything, no messes to clean up.  Easy peasy.

If you think it's just gross, well, gross is a relative term, I guess.  Gross, to me, is millions of pounds of barely-rotting, stinking,  repulsive, disposable menstrual products filling our landfills for years.  Not the simple washing of a resuable product.  After all, we sometimes have accidents when we have our periods, and we don't through our underwear or pants away.  We just wash them.

The GladRags pantyliners were very comfortable and soft.  The only issue I had with them was when I would run, if I was wearing loose underwear, the pantyliners would slide around some.  I just learned to wear tighter underwear while running, which was a small trade off for no leaks, a sustainable product, and comfort!

They cleaned very nicely and dried super fast because they are so thin!

Buy it!

GladRags has an amazing line of reusable feminine products, not just pads, suited for every woman!

Win it!

GladRags has generously offered one Uniquely Normal Mom reader a colored 3-pack of pantyliners in the color of the winner's choice!  US and Canadian residents only, please. Make sure you leave your email address in the comment!

Mandatory Entry:

Skoy Cloth Review and Giveaway! CLOSED

Congratulations to entry #16, Susan!  I'll be contacting you shortly! I hope you enjoy your Skoy cloths! :)

I've mentioned before that we've pretty much eliminated paper towels from our home. We've set an annual goal of using less than one roll or paper towels a year.

Besides adding up financially and being wasteful, it uses up a lot of natural resources and doesn't really clean that well.  You can only use them once.  No rinsing and reusing.

This statistic convicted me majorly in my use of paper towels and my calling towards environmental stewardship:

I came across an amazing alternative called Skoy Cloths.  I have been using them for a couple of weeks and I love how versatile they are!  I've cleaned up spilled water, dirty shoes and even a jar of food that I dropped (twice), with only one cloth for each job!

Here are a few reasons why I love Skoy Cloths:
  • Biodegradable
  • Washer & Dryer safe
  • one Skoy Cloth is equivalent to 15 rolls of paper towels!!!
  • Multi-use
  • Compostable
  • Made of natural ingredients - cotton & cellulose wood pulp
  • Holds 15x it's own weight (this floored me the first time I used one!)

Skoy also has a fundraising program for students and schools in which the school gets to keep 40% of all sales!  Amazing!

My thoughts: Skoy cloths are cheaper than paper towels and they're biodegradable?  I don't see ANY reason not to have them!  I can tell that I will be using my Skoy cloths for a long time, for which I'm very glad.  I love sustainable products, and am glad that there is a safe, reusable replacement for paper towels!

Buy it!

EIO Kids Cup Review and Giveaway! CLOSED!

The winner is comment number 59...

Jenny, from the Peaceful Housewife!! Yay!
Congrats, Jenny, I hope you enjoy your new EIO Kids Cup!
Thanks to all who participated!

Lately, we have been slowly removing plastics products from our kitchen items.  With the documented dangers of BPA and other dangers ingredients in plastic, we really don't want to take the chance when there are other, more eco-friendly options.

We have been trying to find a sippy-like cup for our daughter, but since we prefer to avoid plastic, that seemed nearly impossible!

When choosing a cup for my daughter, I searched high and low for one that:
  • was primarily made of something other than plastic
  • didn't have parts where mold could grow
  • was durable
  • was eco-friendly
  • was stylish
  • something that advanced my daughter's drinking skills
My search for the seemingly impossible yielded the EIO Kids Cup, which met all of my criteria!
A glass cup with a very protective silicone sleeve (silicone does not react with food or beverages like many of the aforementioned plastics) and no parts for cleaning!   It's made of an 8 oz canning jar, so if you ever needed to replace the jar, you can just buy a new jar at the grocery store!  You can put hot or cold drinks in it and it encourages correct use of a cup and not passive suckling.  It's an earth-friendly option that will last for years.

EIO Kids Cup has also received the prestigious PTPA Award, certifying it has been tested as a top children's product!

My thoughts:

The EIO Kids Cup is not spill proof, but neither are plates and bowls and we still teach our children how to properly use them.  The same goes for this cup.  I was skeptical of using glass, but I let India play with it and feel pretty safe with the silicone sleeve.

It is still a little heavy for my daughter, but she is getting the hang of it.  I let my 22 month old niece try it and after my sister explained that she had to be careful with it, she didn't spill as much and was proud of herself!  Her older sister, who is almost four years old, saw the cup and wanted one too!  My sister had to stealthily remove the cup from her home!

India has been having sips of water from glass cups around the house, but I'm excited for her to have her own, safe cup, as is she!

Buy it!
Available online or at these retail locations.

Chewbeads Review & Giveaway! CLOSED!

The winner is...

Congratulations to Crystal of Anonymous Motherhood who won with this comment:

Anonymous Motherhood said...
I liked Chewbeads on FB and told them you sent me

She's a mother to three kids and a doula, so I know she will get good use out of her Chewbeads!

Thanks to all who participated!

According to my daughter, everything, everything, everything, MUST go in her mouth.  I used to wear a pretty necklace that I bought in Tibet, but whenever I wear it now, my daughter treats it as her own personal chew toy.  Not only is it sentimental to me, but I worry about her safety as she tries to chew on my jewelry. I'm pretty picky about what I let her chew on/play with because of the toxicity in many children's products.

Most days, you will find me plain and sans jewelry because of this.  But I don't want to be a plain, frumpy mom.  That would be sad.

I recently heard of this great company, Chewbeads, as I saw a photo like this, of beautiful bracelets that were safe for teething!  I loved all the color variety and I knew this would be perfect for my daughter!

I drooled at that rainbow of colors that could match every item of clothing in my closet!

Chewbeads has graciously sent me a beautiful Hudson Necklace to review!

India, meet Chewbeads.  Chewbeads, India.
Lovely.

  About Chewbeads:
  • They look like 'real' jewelry - very fashionable
  • No BPA, PVC, Phthlates, Cadmium or Lead
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Made of 100% silicone
  • Soft on her little gums, but not soft enough to chew through
  • Breakaway clasp - no matter how hard she pulls, this necklace doesn't break
  • They feel different (better) than other teething jewelry
  • They keep her from pinching me while nursing (THANK YOU!)
  • It keeps my daughter occupied for long periods of time!

What I think:

I highly recommend these to moms with children of any age!  I think any mom or mom-t-be could greatly benefit from them!  I tried the Chewbeads on three different children, ages 8 months to 22 months, and all children were infatuated with them.  It could definitely be said that I am a fan because of all of the above, but the real test is my daughter, and well...

...she's in love!

Buy it!
You can buy Chewbeads (hello, wonderful baby gift!) on their website or if you are from my area, at Pout Baby Boutique!

Blog Changes (I'm quite proud)!

I've spent most of today doing some changes with my blog.  Lots of new fonts, some editing, a new header (took a picture of Little Miss India holding a notebook page I had written on), a SIGNATURE and even a 'Grab my Button' button!  And a ways back, I bought my own URL, so I'm officially http://www.uniquelynormalmom.com/! I'm very proud of myself for figuring it all out today! You should see me smiling right now! Haha, but maybe you didn't even notice that anything changed. :-)

It was a lot to do in one day, for me, as I am NOT proficient in HTML, but thank God for tutorials, patience and a little fire under me.  I plan to make and add more things in the time to come, as some of the waiting lists for custom blog designs are months long!

I was sick of my other header, and I have an opportunity to be a part of blog network in the upcoming months, or maybe year.  I submitted my blog a ways back on this popular site, never guessing I would be picked.  Some people wait years and apply and re-apply to be a part of this blog network, but to my surprise, they accepted me, and I am now on the waiting list!  I'm very excited!

I also hope to venture into the world of ....

... wait for it ....

... product reviews and giveaways!

I'm excited for what is next for my blog!  Thanks for reading and encouraging me!  Oh, and don't forget to share my button on your blog!
