That dreaded pregnancy ailment

You might be wondering what I'm gong to write about.

Swollen sausage feet?  Good one, but nope.

Overactive bladder?  Nah.

Hormonal crazy mama?  That is bad, but nopers.

Nausea?  Not that one either!

I'm talking about and documenting in hopes of helping others, one of the worst symptoms I experienced during my pregnancy.  It was worse than my edema, more horrible than the crazy preggo hormones and believe it or not, worse than the 10 months of daily nausea.

Pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy, also known as PUPPP, or hell.  It's not that common, but once you're had it, you know how ridiculous it is.

I started getting PUPPP about a week before my daughter India was born.  The best way I can describe it is an incredible urge to tear off your skin, as you scratch yourself silly hoping that the scratching will stop the itching, but in reality, you are only making it worse.
PUPPP.  Ouch.
Several people have said that if you can survive PUPPP, you can survive natural childbirth.

Most of it's victims are first time moms, pregnant with boys and many are pregnant with multiples.  (In case you didn't know, I only had one baby, and it was a girl.)  No one has a for sure cause of this miserable condition, although threre is a lot of talk about the liver and cleansing.

Another sad part about PUPPP is that there isn't really a cure in the medical realm (stay tuned to read about the cure I found), except delivery.  Childbirth works for most people, but some initially develop PUPPP in the postpartum period, or continue to feel it's effects for several weeks after delivery (like me).

The onset of PUPPP was quick; I went from a tiny little itch on my belly, to crying on my bed, having hot flashes as I writhed and rocked to prevent myself from scratching.  I took several yards of fabric and wrapped them super tight around my belly, hoping to cut off some of the feeling.  I was also hoping that when I gave into the urge to scratch all the layers of fabric would prevent me from clawing so hard.  I scratched until I bled anyway.  It was awful.

I tried Benadryl and calamine lotion, hot showers and cold showers and good old sun therapy.  Clothing irritated me to no end.  I worked so hard to not scratch.  My body was sending signals to my brain to "scratch! scratch!" and if I ignored those signals I felt like I was going insane.  I was ignoring this constant, nagging instinct and was starting to become emotionally and mentally unstable, fighting all day long to stop the pain.  My sweet husband even took time off of work because he was very concerned.

I googled and read in between itching and crying, and wrapping myself up so I wouldn't scratch.  I became more and more depressed as I read horror stories of women dealing with this for weeks, sometimes months, with nothing but an antihistamine and some anti-itch gel from their doctor, which got them relief for a few minutes.  Some woman had permanent scars from tearing their skin as they scratched.  One woman took a steel brush to it until she was raw.  I understood that.  I wanted to cut my skin off.

Many women I read about convinced doctors to induce labor or do a c-section to relieve the PUPPP.  I also did some calling around, and received the same answers: delivery is the only cure.  I was stuck in my miserable state.

But I won't take no for an answer, and as I started looking for a natural remedy for PUPPP, I heard of Grandpa's Pine Tar Soap, which most people have good results with, but I didn't want to wait for it to be shipped to me.  Then I found something that everyone praised, not just as a suppressor of symptoms, but as something that would take away the PUPPP: dandelion root.

*cue Hallelujah chorus*

I found out that dandelion root is safe to take during pregnancy and how much to take and quickly got in my car and purchased dandelion root in capsule form from my local health food store.  I took 1000mg, three times a day.  It took two days for it to kick in, but OH.THE.BLISS!!!  I cannot describe how good it felt!  It took a full week for it to get to the point where I barely noticed it.  I also upped my daily drinking of nettle leaf tea.
Starting to get better!
You could say that I am a lover of dandelion root! :-)

I struggled with PUPPP somewhat after India was born, and I had stopped taking the dandelion root, but it was nothing compared to what I had dealt with before.

If you or someone you know is struggling with PUPPP, don't hesitate to get some dandelion root.  You'll be very glad that you did!

Thank you for this. PUPPP arrived yesterday and I am miserable. I am only 18 weeks pregnant. Doc said when it arrives this early it usually goes away in about two weeks and doesn't come back. I am going to look for dandelion root today.

Thanks for this post.  I developed PUPPP at approximately 35.5wks.  I had my twins by c-section at nearly 38wks and was looking forward to not only meeting my babies but to my itching going away.  Well, I got the babies (and they're perfect!), but no relief from the itch.  I'm still itching like mad, and, in facgt, postpartum, the rash has spread all down my legs, and I'm scratching them to bits.  :(  I'm only 1.5wks postpartum, and everything I've been reading has indicated this could go on for much, much longer.

I plan now to check w/my doctor to see if dandelion root is okay while breastfeeding becaue if it is, I'm heading to the healthfood store ASAP!

How long did you deal with PUPPPS? I had it a few weeks after the birth of my daughter in 2010 (lasted about a month), but now I find myself 6 months post partum after the birth of my son and am still getting insanely itchy welts on my abdomen. Is this possible? Is PUPPPS hounding me this many months later?

I really don't know if that is PUPPP, Maggie.  Do you have bumps still?

I started to develop pupps late in my 3rd trimester, around 37 weeks . They were hidden under my stretch marks, so at first I just thought I had itchy stretche marks. Buy on my 39th week appt, my doctor informed me it was pupps and that if the baby didn't come till the due date they would inducte me soon after to help get rid of the itch. Well the baby arrived a day early and then the rash really took off! 3 days post partum I called my Ob/gyn for help and he was shocked. He thought it to be highly unusually and suggested I see a dermatoligist. Well my dermatoligist's appt is in 2 days. But the itch was unbearable so I took to research and got myself pine tar soap, nettles tea and dandellion root pills. Today I took 1080 mg 3 times and had the tea once. Let's see how this works out. Wish me luck, its already spread all over my stomach , chest and now spreading to my arms and thighs.

I'm so glad I found this! I didn't develop the rash until after the baby was born. It's been 3 weeks and I'm going insane! I hope my dandelion root starts to kick in soon. This is the most miserable itch!

Developed this rash a week after delivery and when almost 10 months after the delivery/ Im still hoping its something else, but it looks and feel exactly the same like the last time. I wonder since I still produce some breast milk for my almost 10 month baby, if breastfeeding causing any hormonal imbalance that would cause it.

Worked for me too!  I wish healthcare providers weren't bound to the "We can't recommend it because it's not FDA tested" schtick.  I found dandelion to be the common denominator in most pupps relief posts on the internet too.  I spoke with a Certified Herbalist at a local shop that gathers/processes their own tinctures.  She assured me that it was quite safe for pregnancy, and is even recommended to help prevent biliruben (jaundice, which I had with my first).  She made me a formula with milk thistle and dandelion root, and my pupps only itches a little now - which is more like a dry skin itch than the truly insanity-inducing itch of the active rash.  I also use the Pine Tar Soap in the shower (but the soap alone would never have done it) I'm still not moisturizing at all - seemed to encourage small spots to revive.  I SOOOO hope other women suffering from pupps will try the dandelion root.  It's for real.  Strange though - because Dr.s aren't really blaming pupps on a liver problem - but dandelion root is a liver aid.

Oh God, I wish I had read all this information about Dandelion Root 8 weeks ago! I have been suffering from this for that long now. My daughter is 6 weeks old and the rash/itch/bumps/welts are still developing in new places on my body. I am covered nearly head to toe. I can relate to everything you have said, and have used the words "I want to cut mt skin off" to my OB, Dermatologist and Endocrinologist. I have been taking a big dose of Oral steroids, using strong prescription topic ointments and taking antihistamines. Nothing seems to be working. I had a scheduled C-section and can remember the itching on my arms, legs, back and buttocks starting in the recovery room. It hasn't stopped since. I have another appointment with the dermatologist tomorrow morning which I am now going to cancel and I will instead head to the health food store to buy Dandelion Root. It will save me an additional $180 for the consultation and will probably be the first thing that has worked. I should upload a photo as I look like I have either measles or meningococcal. If it works I will tell my OB so she doesn't just dismiss it as something normal and untreatable that 'will just go away in 3 weeks'. Does anyone know if Dandelion Root is safe while breastfeeding? Everything I read says to check with your doctor, but as you can imagine I don't have too much faith in what my doctors have to say regarding any of this!

I've been dealing with this for about two months now and despite all my tests coming back normal (they've ran 3 complete panels on me because I keep developing weird ailments this time around) I started taking dandelion root last week and the improvement is amazing! I still have small itchy spots like on my thighs but I no longer itch until I cry from my neck to my feet and wrists. My skin has improved from red raw everything hurts to just a little dry feeling almost like when your skin is healing from sunburn.

I have been taking this dose of dandelion root three times a day for 4 days now and it doesn't seem to be working :-( please tell me it'll get better! I'm lucky because I'm having a c section in 4 days, but I'm worried that it won't go away even after that! It's so frustrating! I've a fairly mild case of it I think, not such an angry rash compared with images on Google, but it's still so itchy and I've had it over a month. I'm drinking lemon juice, nettle tea and v8 as I've heard of these also helping. But no luck yet!

Hi Ashley, are you sure it's PUPPP? I ask because I know two other people who thought they had PUPPP but it ended up being something else. I know you're due to have your baby any day now but just in case it doesn't clear up afterwards, you might want to check into other pregnancy rashes. Hugs and good luck!

I had a rash first start on my forearms and hands over a month ago. It lasted about 4 wks and I didn't seek treatment. I chalked it up to a heat rash. Then, after nothing for a few wks, the rash flared up again a few days ago. I'm now 22wks pregnant with a girl. This time it started on my right knee, forearms and hands. Then, I noticed a small patch on my belly. I went to the dermatologist yesterday and she immediately said PUPPPS. I'm not sure I believe it. Today I woke up with it also on my chest, neck, face and ears, and it has spread over all my belly. My face and ears are on fire! I've been researching like crazy. Is it really PUPPPS with it all over my face and ears? Unlike all the research, I haven't seen it affect others like that and it never started on my belly like it says happens. I plan to try the dandelion root pills. The prescribed cortizone cream isn't cutting it. I'm so miserable! I can't sleep.

What did it end up being if not PUPPP?

Fabulous post! I had PUPPP with my first. It was awful. I used Pine Tar Soap and would let it dry on in the shower or bath and then rinse off. I would take oatmeal baths, coconut oil, you name it.. I tried it... steroid creams, antihistamine creams, nothing would help. Didn't go away until LO arrived.

Baby #2, I started getting at 36ish weeks. I'm miserable all over again and I am so glad I finally actually stumbled on a blog that talks about it. This time it's only on my belly. I made the "Tiger Salve" that Katie Wellness Mama talks about, only I did it with Shea, Coconut, Olive oils and stovetop infused chamomile, calendula and ginger. I "think" it's been helping. I also went to Vitamin Shoppe and got the Dandelion Root today and I'm going to try that out. I'm hoping it's also the miracle cure for me.. I can't stand this... it is most certainly hell.
