India's 1st Birthday Cake

Anyone that knows me really, really well knows that I'm a perfectionist.  I have been all my life.  I won't do something if I can't do it well.  Most areas of my life have some form of perfectionism, but I'm pretty good at hiding it!  ;)

India's 1st birthday is over a month away, but I made her a smash cake today.  No, she won't actually eat this one now (I will), but I wanted to do a run through of the cake, buttercream frosting and fondant.

We are doing her dedication and 1st birthday party all in one!  It'll be only immediate family, about 50 people, and about 10 of our closest friends.

The theme is something along the lines of our baby girl is turning ONE, fun in the sun, let's celebrate our little Sunshine, something like that.  We don't do character themes and I thought the sun described India perfectly.  Amazing, brightening, intense, needed, and volatile.  Kind of kidding, kind of serious about that last one...

Yellow everything - and if it's not yellow, it'll have yellow ribbon on it.  But not obnoxious yellow.  Think: yellow and white gingham, fresh flowers, lemonade from Mason glasses, green grass and country.  Easy, breezy, beautiful, 1st birthday. :)

My little Sunshine's practice cake!
It's a good thing I did a practice one, because if I would've made this the day of India's first birthday party, I would've been marching my butt to a bakery, ordering a cake because I think this one looks cheap! There are quite a few things I'd like to fix and/or change.

Maybe a taller cake with gingham fondant around the edge and fresh yellow flowers on top!

Or maybe, yellow fondant, with white vine designs climbing up it?   No, this is a first birthday party, Genevieve, not a wedding.

I also need to get some photos of India for the invitations, so we tried that today.  Here's what I got:

Until I gave her her baby doll back, that she so desperately wanted!

See, I told you I was kind of serious when I used the word volatile to describe her!

What did you do for your child's first birthday?  Do you have large birthday celebrations every year?

We did an Elmo party for Ethan's first birthday and a Pumpkin/Jack-o-lantern for Abram's. I LOVE birthdays and think all should be celebrated regardless of age! We go all out and do fun stuff. Now that the boys are older we let them pick what they want to have/do. It's awesome!

Ah, cute!! Our boys had traditional Korean ceremonies on their first birthdays. They dressed in traditional '1st year' clothes and chose their destinies among significant objects placed before them. DH made traditional Korean birthday food and Theo got a 'dduk' cake (some sort of cakeish creation made from rice that we drove to the Cities to get). We make a decent fuss over every birthday, but no super big parites yet. Our family isn't large, and they've been too little for full-on friend birthday parties yet!

This is our last year of doing a big celebration! I say that, but now I need to stick to it! :) We don't do characters and I do try and choose a "theme" each year. I love planning it and especially enjoy the cake. If I had more time, I would have made a fondant cake this year. I am 99% positive I am making my own cake, but I am hiring someone to make the fondant decorations. Fun, but not totally the same for me as I love making my own creative cake.

I like your theme, and you need to teach me how to work with fondant! :)

I think the cake looks great. I love your theme. Did you try smashing it? A friend of mine made a cake with fondant (I'm not very familar with it) and her son couldn't get into it through the fondant. Maybe her's was too thick or something. I don't know. I need to start trying some fondant things though because it looks better.

She's adorable :) and that cake looks delicious too! My baby's 1st is coming up in August. I haven't planned anything yet, but we'll see. Good luck with all the planning!

Each of our 4 kids had Winnie-the-Pooh for their first birthday. I was really into Pooh when our first was born and then somewhere along the way of having babies it became a tradition. I reused some decorations but tailored the girls' parties to be more...girly. We don't have much family here so we've always done it with family friends and now that they are older their friends from school. We are starting to taper it off, not because they aren't important, but because I can't fit twelve 12 year old boys in my house. We've done bowling parties, a tea party at the museum, a trip the the Redhawks (with only a couple friends), Thumperpond, and the Breckenridge pool. I love doing them in my home, but it's so much stress for me. I want to spend time on the cake, etc., not cleaning and putting clothes away. And for the record, I thought your cake was beautiful. How fun!

For the invites the first picture could have the caption "You're not coming to my party?" and the second could say "You ARE coming to my party!" hehe

Your cake looks great! It doesn't look cheap. I really like the idea of a sun theme.

Our daughter is 15 months old. For her first birthday we had a ladybug theme since she loves ladybugs. We had a small gathering at home.

We invite a bunch of people over for a first birthday party, but try to keep it as low key as we can for following birthdays. I was so worked up about Silje's first birthday and caused myself way too much stress, and have learned how to keep things simple, because if I'm worked up and stressed, my 1 year old feels it and it makes for a cranky party.

I love the yellow theme you're doing. So so so much fun!

You all have such great ideas that fit you and your families so well!

I swore that I wouldn't go crazy with the 1st birthday party because she won't even remember it, but after thinking about how many kids don't make it to their 1st birthday worldwide, I realized it is something to be celebrated.
